For maximum lifetime and performance of the fixed optical network, Huber+Suhner provides software-controlled switching of optical circuits. The POLATIS range of switches incorporates decades of expertise along with the latest technological advances, and features patented DirectLight technology™. A unique optical circuit switch that can accommodate „dark fiber“ connections, allowing transmission of weak or intermittent signals.
The origin of HUBER and SUHNER dates back to 1864; the merger in 1968 created a company with a long tradition of innovation, maintaining its leadership in metallic, radio frequency, and optical connectivity for demanding applications.
Optical circuit switches are Optical-Optical-Optical (OOO) switches, highly efficient for fast switching of large data volumes at high bit rates among fibers and for low-latency applications. By incorporating an OOO switch into your network, you create a powerful and cost-effective layout that allows you to „switch when you want and route when you need to“.
OOO switches have a unique advantage over traditional OEO switches because they transmit the original input light signal through the fully optical core of the switch – without converting it to an electrical signal. Because the switches do not buffer or regenerate optical signals, OOO switches have extremely low data latency compared to OEO switches. The optical circuit switch allows your system to quickly secure, protect, test, and monitor a huge number of cross connections. This leads to maximised network lifetime and increased efficiency. Optical circuit switching technology is also future-proof, with no need to update or replace it, although the format and speed of the signal may change over time.
The POLATIS optical switching core is based on the DirectLight beam steering technology™, patented by HUBER+SUHNER. This results in transmission with minimal loss, with minimal distortion or interference between the paths.
Unlike other OOO switches, POLATIS switching occurs independently of signal level, colour, or direction. This allows the switch to maintain optical links on unlit paths, the ability to pre-fabricate „dark fibers“, and bi-directional transmission. Thanks to the DirectLight optical switching technology,™ POLATIS enables transparent and robust connections even on dark fibers. DirectLight beam steering technology™ sets the technological standard for highest performance and lowest optical loss.
